Bookbinding with Sarah Kim

On a quiet Saturday in February 2017, I met Sarah at the North Bennet Street School in Boston’s North End neighborhood. She had been enrolled in the bookbinding program there for just about a year, and was kind enough to share what she had already learned from her short time in the program.

In this piece, Sarah walks us through the steps of creating a new notebook from start to finish.

I still use the book she made, sparingly as it has become a precious craft object in my mind. The point of the book is to use it though, so the best way I can see to appreciate the work that went into making it, is to fill it.

Sarah isn’t binding any books these days, but stays creative in other ways. Cliche’s about journey’s and destinations come to mind, but in lieu of that, enjoy the video.
